In latest Web ad Cahill urges Patrick and Legislative leaders to get back to work

Stop playing politics with our economy and pass a bill for casino gambling

Massachusetts State Treasurer and Independent candidate for Governor Tim Cahill released video today calling on Governor Patrick and the State Legislature to get back to work and call a special session to pass a bill for casino gambling. The gaming bill, which died after the Governor vetoed a compromise between House and Senate leaders, has already cost Massachusetts 15,000 jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars of instant revenue for struggling cities and towns. With a $2 billion deficit already facing lawmakers this fiscal year and unemployment a critical issue for the Massachusetts middle class, Cahill urged Governor Patrick and the legislative leadership to come together for the sake of working families.

“It's been almost 2 months since the gaming bill was vetoed by the Governor and since then we've lost more jobs with the closure of Wonderland and layoffs at Plainridge. I made a plea back then that the leadership and Governor put their bickering aside for the sake of working families and my pleas were ignored.   While the Governor and Legislature have enjoyed their summer off thousands of families spent their summers off too, difference being they had no choice. I am calling on House and Senate leaders to call a special session to get jobs back in this state by overriding the Governor's veto. I will not stand by and wait five months for the Legislature to return to session to talk about job creation, the time for talking is over and the unemployment issue rests solely in their hands if they fail to act. But this is not simply a legislative issue. The gaming industry gave us the opportunity for thousands of jobs and instant state revenue and the Governor turned his back on them based on an arbitrary definition of racinos to satisfy his base. The party politics must end today for the sake of our economy.” said Cahill.

It’s time for the politicians to do their job and call a special session to pass the casino bill. Fifteen thousand people won’t work next month because Beacon Hill is playing partisan politics again. They gamble with our economy with their games and now they take five months off while our families are hurting. It’s wrong-and as your Governor-I’ll get it done.

“This Labor Day there are some 15,000 people who won't wake up and go to work tomorrow because the Governor and Legislature are putting political games ahead of our working families. Governor Patrick has shown that he does not have the courage to stand up for them and sign this bill. Charlie Baker opposes this jobs program because he is out of touch with the daily struggles of the middle class. The first bill I'll sign as Governor will be the gaming bill to put money in the pockets of working families and the taxpayers of Massachusetts,” said Cahill.
