Charlie Baker is a first time candidate
Today, Cahill Campaign Manager Adam Meldrum released the following plea to members of the media in advance of tonight's debate:
“Tonight, it is important for everyone to remember that Charlie Baker is a first time candidate. People have been telling Charlie Baker for years that he is the rightful heir to the throne of Weld, Cellucci and Romney, and he is clearly having a hard time adjusting to the fact that this is a competitive campaign and not a coronation ceremony. We should all be patient with him.
Each of the candidates will be facing off against Deval Patrick this evening, a seasoned veteran in these types of forums. It is unrealistic for people to expect much from a first time candidate like Mr. Baker.
For instance, Mr. Baker still thinks simple questions about his record are negative personal attacks. I blame his staff. I do not think anyone has told him that things would be a lot easier if he just owned up to his role as the architect of the Big Dig Financing scheme. Or that he should just admit to making millions off the Massachusetts middle class by raising insurance rates over 150%. Did I mention Mr. Baker is a first time candidate with only 10 years of experience working in government?
Charlie Baker has only been running this campaign for over one full year now. Who do we think we are to expect a newcomer like Mr. Baker to have answers for tough questions at this point? After all, there are still 55 days left in this campaign. That is plenty of time. Did I mention Mr. Baker is a first time candidate with only 10 years of experience working in government?
Tonight, I am calling on everyone to take it easy on Charlie Baker. Mr. Baker is clearly still unable to handle the pressure at this point. Let's all give him just a little more time, and I am sure he will get there sooner or later.”
