Cahill Fact Checks Governor’s Remarks on Evergreen Solar

During today’s Cape Wind debate, Massachusetts State Treasurer and Independent candidate for Governor Tim Cahill called Governor Patrick out on awarding millions in taxpayer dollars to Evergreen Solar.  After challenging the Governor on the merits of government choosing which companies win or lose in Massachusetts, Patrick stated Evergreen was only awarded $21 million in taxpayer subsidies.

In reality, Evergreen received an upwards of $76 million.  An October 17, 2009 Boston Globe article “Cloudy outlook on state’s bet for solar energy firm” clearly states, “Patrick sealed the deal by offering Evergreen more than $76 million in grants, land, loans, tax incentives and other aid”.

The breakdown of the $76 million includes: $22.6 million in tax incentives, $21 million in direct grants, $17.5 million in discounted loans, $13 million in infrastructure grants and $2.3 million for the Devens site lease.

“Yet again the Patrick administration is using the bait and switch model of misleading the public into believing Evergreen Solar is a Massachusetts success story. The Governor failed to acknowledge how he will save the hundreds of jobs that are at stake when Evergreen moves its solar panel production to China,” said Cahill.
