Cahill Blasts National Grid for Proposing Rate Hike
Calls excessive costs passed on to ratepayers unacceptable
Massachusetts State Treasurer and candidate for Governor Tim Cahill released the following statement after it was announced National Grid is seeking a rate hike for consumers.
“National Grid’s proposed gas rate hike is outrageous and unacceptable. If the Governor had been paying attention to the company’s operations instead of catering to its executives for campaign donations, he would have noticed the excessive costs passed on to ratepayers.
Not only will consumers be charged with high costs for Cape Wind, but now they are expected to pay an extra 7 percent on their monthly bill for a $106 million-a-year rate hike. I support the Attorney General’s request for a thorough independent audit of National Grid’s books, and I would go further to say that National Grid should reimburse ratepayers for the extravagant costs it charged during 2008-2009 and any previous years.
There has been a consistent lack of transparency and oversight in the utility provider market in Massachusetts. The Governor should be acting in the best interest of Massachusetts taxpayers, not the top executives of National Grid”, said Timothy P. Cahill.
